What's the point of doing stuff
What is the end goal of my work? Whether that’s my trading, science work, or bike-packing, what’s it all for?
I used to be pretty utilitarian, where I did things because they were useful. But that’s changed now. It seems that artificial intelligence is quickly being able to solve a lot of the things I set out to do. So my marginal contribution feels small.
Then I used to things because I enjoyed them. When I went about doing something, I just said fuck it, I don’t really know what the end goal is. I’ll do it because I like it. But that’s changed because things started to feel a bit meaningless when I did this to the extreme.
So now, I’ve done another reframe. By process of elimination, I’ve had to find the final reason to do things.
I am now doing things so that I can improve myself.
There are three the things I can get from the act of creation. The first thing is the utility of what I create. The second is the pleasure of creating. But these reasons feel weak now in today’s context.
So the third reason makes the most sense. When create something, I also enhance my own being. My cognition increases. I can write better. I build better social skills when I collaborate with others. I increase my capacity for symbolic reasoning. I better my motor skills with my hands. I become a better empiricist. I write better.
I don’t know whether enhancing oneself is the final boss of reasons to do things. But I can’t think of anything else right now!
